(NEWAGE.CO.ZA) - The declaration of 'war' on Boko Haram extremists by African leaders at a security summit in Paris is a major step to tackle the regional threat posed by the group as well as help end the insurgency if properly implemented, analysts say.

"It's a good thing that the leaders have agreed to work together to fight Boko Haram," said Nwolise Osisioma, a professor and head of political science and international relation at the University of Ibadan, southwest Nigeria.

"But the leaders must have the political will to execute the decision with one mind. If they do, it will go a long way in checkmating Boko Haram," he said.

Boko Haram has dropped demands for the release of top commanders in talks with the Nigerian government and is prepared to start releasing up to half its kidnapped schoolgirls in coming days, sources close to the group have said.

The militant Islamist group, which kidnapped more than 200 schoolgirls a month ago, is willing to conduct a “gradual” release of its hostages in return for the release of Boko Haram prisoners in Nigerian jails, it was claimed.

Sitting in her chair with a head of grey hair, a buttoned-up cardigan and a beaming smile, you’d be forgiven for thinking Sheila Vogel-Coupe was just like any other grandmother. But that is exactly what she is not.
