All Progressives Congress {APC} South East salutes His Royal Majesty, Igwe Alfred Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, for his candour and splendid reminder of the empty promises made to Ndigbo, by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, during the 2011 presidential campaign, among which is the completion of the 2nd Niger Bridge.
President Jonathan in his usual characteristics of self-denial countered the Obi, by denying that he didn’t promise to complete the bridge, but will flag-off before Governor Peter Obi exits on March 2015. Is it not wise for Ndigbo to vote for the person who will complete the bridge?
Flag-off what? As we cannot locate the 2nd Niger Bridge neither in the 2013 nor 2014 national budget. Is the bridge going to be awarded without due process of National Assembly’s appropriation? All we heard is that Julius Berger Plc is being giving concession to construct the 1.8 km bridge at N100bn. This will be the costliest bridge on earth, we stand to be corrected.
The truth of the matter is that His Royal Majesty is not known to take prisoners; as a former top manger in Shell International, he is aware that President Jonathan has not mustered the political will, as it doesn’t take more than 4 years, since the promise was made to complete a 1.8 km bridge and outlay of less than 20 km road network.
More so when there is abundant resources in the federal treasury, the needful was for our dear president if he wanted to fulfill the promise was to call for competitive bid, award the project transparently at less cost and complete the bridge before now.
In sum, the APC South East once more commends the Obi of Onitsha, an intellectual and consummate bureaucrat for his accurate record keeping, the courage to speak the truth and the royalty to stand up when other Igwes and prominent Igbos are falling over themselves to join the gravy train of the heavily stocked presidential campaign’s war chest.
